Nigeria’s electoral umpire is already planning for the toughest roads, creeks and danger zones ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday inaugurated an INEC election logistics committee in Abuja. Its job is to design safe and timely routes for both sensitive and non-sensitive election materials across road, air and maritime channels. National Commissioner Jamila Abubakar-Sadiq, a retired Rear Admiral, will lead the panel.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, said the success of any election depends on logistics. Materials, he stressed, must get to polling units at the appointed time, and no Nigerian should lose the chance to vote because they arrived late. He warned committee members that logistical failures could weaken the entire electoral process.

Amupitan said the INEC election logistics committee will work with military and paramilitary bodies, security agencies and transport organisations. Its tasks include assessing the needs of the 2027 polls, planning how materials will be stored, distributed, deployed and retrieved, and auditing the readiness of warehouses, vehicles, airports and seaports. It will also flag gaps, track compliance with schedules and propose fixes for bottlenecks, shortages and security threats.

He pointed to Nigeria’s varied landscape, from the creeks of the Niger Delta to the arid north, as a reason for flexible and resilient arrangements.

Abubakar-Sadiq described election logistics as the operational foundation of democracy, tied directly to electoral integrity and public confidence. She said the committee will focus on airlift and cargo planning, land and maritime coordination, and mapping hard-to-reach and crisis-prone areas. Tailored transport and security plans will be drawn up for high-risk locations. She also proposed subcommittees for airlift, land transport, maritime transport, and storage and security.

Under the arrangement, the Central Bank of Nigeria will handle the receipt, storage and distribution of sensitive materials through its branch network.

The inauguration drew INEC national commissioners, representatives of the Chief of Defence Staff and service chiefs, and officials from the Nigeria Immigration Service, Civil Aviation Authority, Civil Defence Corps, Federal Airports Authority and Nigerian Ports Authority. Transport unions and maritime workers were also present.
