A young Nigerian engineering student is proving that innovation solving Africa’s problems doesn’t have to be built abroad. Ikechukwu Alfred, a Delta State native and Class of 2027 Robotics Engineering student at Academic City University in Ghana, has developed a precision farming system designed to help farmers monitor large stretches of farmland without being physically present on site.
The precision farming system, created as part of Alfred’s Embedded Systems coursework, works by collecting environmental and agricultural data directly from farms and transmitting it over long distances. This means farmers no longer have to walk vast farmlands to check on crop and soil conditions, a development that could ease one of the most time-consuming parts of large-scale farming across the continent.
Alfred said the project deepened his belief that technology should be built with real-world problems in mind. “Engineering is not just about building machines. It is about creating solutions that improve lives,” he said.
His journey into robotics started early, driven by curiosity about electronics and programming. He had initially considered studying in Europe but changed his plans after discovering an opportunity to pursue advanced technology education within Africa, choosing Academic City University after finding the robotics programme while still in secondary school.
Beyond the classroom, Alfred has stayed active on campus, serving as Public Relations and Communication Officer of the Academic City Student Council, while also participating in the university’s Robotics Club and its Arts, Media and Drama Club. Academic City University has students from more than 20 nationalities and offers programmes in areas such as Robotics Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Cybersecurity.
Alfred hopes his story encourages other young Africans to look closer to home for cutting-edge education. He believes talent and opportunity don’t have to be separated by continents, and that Africa’s own universities are becoming serious hubs for tech innovation.
His precision farming system adds to a growing list of student-led African innovations tackling agriculture, one of the continent’s most vital but under-digitised sectors, and signals a future where young engineers build homegrown tools for homegrown problems.
