The Oyo abducted pupils and their teachers, who were seized by suspected bandits in the Oriire Local Government Area of the state, have finally regained their freedom. This was confirmed on Thursday by presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, who said the victims were freed through the coordinated efforts of security agencies.
The relief brings to an end a harrowing ordeal that gripped the nation for weeks and turned the spotlight on Nigeria’s worsening school security crisis. News of the abduction had triggered widespread outrage, with protests rocking Ibadan and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) staging rallies in Oyo, Kano, and other states to demand the safe return of the victims.
The case also reached the National Assembly, where the Senate adopted a motion urging the Federal Government and security agencies to secure the release of the captives. Lawmakers further called for the Safe Schools Initiative to be strengthened with better surveillance and intelligence gathering around vulnerable schools across the country.
While the Presidency has not yet disclosed further details on how the operation was carried out or the exact number of pupils and teachers released, the development is expected to bring relief to distraught families who had endured weeks of uncertainty. It also comes as President Bola Tinubu continues to meet with security chiefs to review the country’s response to rising insecurity.
